Tallest Person In The World

Pituitary gigantism is by far the most common cause of extreme height. It usually occurs due to over-secretion of growth hormone from cells in the pituitary gland or as a result of a tumor on this same gland at the base of the brain. A Kurdish farmer, Sultan Kösen stands at 8 feet 2.8 inches and is the tallest living man in the world, as per Guinness World Records. His abnormally tall stature is due to a condition called acromegaly that affects the production of growth hormone in the pituitary gland. At 8 ft 3 in, Turkish part-time farm laborer Sultan Kösen is the tallest living man in the world. Like many of the other people on this list, Kösen's condition is caused by a tumor affecting his pituitary gland that has been linked to acromegaly.

And as with Koehler, Kösen's growth rate was normal until the age of 10, at which point he quickly shot up to over six feet. The current tallest living man is Sultan Kösen from Turkey, who stands 2.5 metres or 8 foot 2 inches. His height is also attributed to the pituitary gland secreting too much growth hormone. Kosen grew at a normal rate until he was 10, but then developed a condition called pituitary gigantism, which was caused by a tumor, according to the BBC. The world's tallest man, Sultan Kosen of Turkey, poses in front of Tower Bridge to celebrate the launch of the 2010 Guinness Book of Records, on Sept. 16, 2009 in London, England.

Sultan Kosen was 8 ft 1 in at the time he was measured for the record and also holds the record for the largest hands and largest feet at 27.5cm and 36.5cm respectively. He is currently 8 ft 3 in tall, but U.S. doctors announced in March that with the help of treatment, Kosen has stopped growing. Robert Wadlow, was 8 feet, 11.1 inches tall when he died in 1940 at age 22. He was the largest human to ever walk the Earth, at least in recorded history, and spent his early years walking the streets of Alton, where he was born. He also holds the world record for the largest hands ever (12.75 inches from the wrist to the tip of his middle finger). Robert Wadlow, 10, right, of Alton, poses with an 11-year-old boy of average height in 1929.

Wadlow, who has an over-active pituitary gland that causes his radical growth, is 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 241 pounds. A tumor, pressing against his pituitary gland, caused it to secrete abnormal levels of growth hormone. For all Mehrzad's giant stature, the painful truth is that his health is deteriorating. Only person on the planet, Turkish farmer Sultan Kosen, is registered as having greater height than the Iranian, at 8ft 3¼in. The prognosis is far from reassuring, with acromegaly sufferers given an average life expectancy 10 years shorter than the rest of the population.

Wadlow's height was 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m) while his weight reached 439 lb at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone . Even by the time of his death, there was no indication that his growth had ended. As with many of the world's tallest men, he has had a dysfunction with his body's release of growth hormone.

Kosen's rate of growth surged from the age of ten because of a tumor which caused too much growth hormone to be released from his pituitary gland. The tumor was successfully removed by surgery and he finally stopped growing in 2008. Topping our list is Robert Wadlow, "The Giant of Illinois." Having reached a height of 8 ft 11 in, Wadlow is the tallest confirmed person to have ever lived. Born in Alton, Illinois in 1918, he suffered from hypertrophy of the pituitary gland, causing him to produce massive amounts of human growth hormone. Brahim Takioullah is the joint second-tallest living person in the world, alongside Iranian man Morteza Mehrzad. Takioullah also holds the Guinness World Record as the owner of the "world's largest feet on a living person" at over 15 inches in length.

Takioullah was born in Morocco in 1982, and his size is the result of a tumor that affects his pituitary gland. Ukrainian-born Igor Vovkovinskiy had a condition called pituitary gigantism that caused an excessive secretion of growth hormone. Vovkovinskiy came to Rochester in Minnesota state from Ukraine in 1989 to get treated for a condition known as pituitary gigantism.

A tumour pressing against his pituitary gland caused it to secrete abnormal levels of growth hormone, according to his Facebook page. Wadlow stood 6 feet, 2 inches tall at just eight years old. Today, medicine helps account for such problems, but in the 1920s and 30s, when Wadlow lived, there was no therapy available. Could you imagine an entire country full of people who are really tall? Some countries around the world are known for having citizens who are particularly tall.

Statistically, the country with the tallest people is the Netherlands. The average height of Dutch adults is approximately six feet, one inch. But tests made it clear that Ren Keyu's growth hormone, pituitary gland and other results were normal.

The cause of this hyperproduction of growth hormone is situated in the pituitary gland, the part of the brain where a large range ofhormones are produced. In most cases of gigantism or acromegaly, a pituitaryadenoma is the cause of this hormonal imbalance. Igor Vovkovinskiy, the country's tallest person at 7-foot-8, died in Minnesota at the age of 38. The tallest man in modern US history was Robert Wadlow, who was 8 feet 9 inches (2.72 meters). He also suffered from a growth hormone disorder, and died in 1940 at the age of 22.

What would account for such an incredible growth at such an early age? Everyone has a pituitary, a pea-sized gland located at the base of the brain. This condition causes an abnormally high level of the human growth hormone and Robert was never given any treatment to stop it.
